Charles Bruno & Son was one of the largest guitar wholesalers of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The firm was founded in 1834, but the earliest records of the company’s founder being in the music business are payments by C.F. Martin to Charles Bruno in 1836. Bruno apparently worked for C.F. Martin as his bookkeeper or business manager in Martin’s New York music store. Bruno disappeared from the scene when Martin relocated to Nazareth, Pennsylvania in 1839, but resurfaced in New York in 1848 as a merchant and musical instrument dealer. Bruno sold instruments by Martin and many other guitar builders –both U.S. and foreign – many of which carried the Bruno brand.
